BetterBone review

Our dog is a big chewer. Every “long lasting” chew toy that the pet store has to offer, gets eaten in 5 minutes.

This has been sort of an issue for us, because we want to keep our dog happy, but we can’t…

That’s when our friend recommended us BetterBone, which is a new healthy dog chew option.

Our friend said that it’s “like chewing on a stick, except this one doesn’t splinter”. Let’s talk about if she was right.

Simple, Natural, dog chew toy

BetterBone is an American company that started in 2021.

In it’s store it has 3 types of products - classic BetterBones, tough BetterBones and their BetterLeash / BetterCollar items. The bones themselves have 2 sizes and 2 “flavours”: Beef, and natural hypoallergenic.

We got the tough beef version of the BetterBone, which costs around 20$ + shipping.

BetterBone is big on health, naturality and being green. You can see all of the things they focus on on their pages and on the packaging. It’s good that they’re good!

What makes a good chew

First, here is our experience with all sorts of chew items.

All normal chew foods, such as Pedigree chew sticks go in under 60 seconds, like the movie. Those are just a complete money hole.

The only things in the store that have any longevity are some heavily processed sticks - but many people have pointed out that sometimes, some dogs have bad experiences with them.

One of the things that our dog can’t get through - is antlers. Which you can actually buy in stores for dogs to chew.
These things are so touch that you need a saw to go through them.

On the other side of things - sticks and branches that have fallen off of trees are my dogs’ favourite - also mine because of the “price” - but the risk of eating splinters is pretty high, and I can’t really let my dog splinter up our living room either.

BetterBone is made from food-grade ingredients and it tries to aim for 2 toughnesses: same as raw hide for the classic version, and for the though version - a level below antler toughness

Is BetterBone any good?

I can safely say that our dog loves BetterBone.

The tough bone is exactly as strong as they say - tough but not as impossible to chew as the antlers.

We don’t smell any beef flavour per say - but our dog definitely seems to smell something.

It doesn’t splinter and our dog can safely chew on it without problems. This is what it looks like after a day of chewing.

BetterBone doesn't splinter

But, on the other end - our friend’s dog didn’t like it, for whatever reason. Ours did though.

Your dog might have it’s own personal opinion about this bone as well.

I recommend starting out with the classic version first, which is a little bit softer. It is both cheaper and a little bit easier for your dog to get started with.

If your dog likes it and it is too soft - you can always level up to the tough variant.
