We, at Pocket Puppy School have used Tractive dog GPS tracker for over 4 years. This time Tractive partnered with us and sent a few of their pet trackers, including their newest Dog 6 and Cat Mini, for us to test.
We have written full Tractive GPS tracker reviews, so feel free to check them out. In this blog post however, we’re gonna do a FAQ about Tractive.

What does Tractive do?
If this is the first time you’re hearing about Tractive and wondering, what this company actually does. Then don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Tractive specializes in pet GPS tracking devices. Their dog GPS and cat GPS trackers attach to your pet’s collar and use GPS and cellular networks to provide location updates, activity monitoring, live location.

Most asked questions about Tractive
1. What is your review of Tractive? Is Tractive worth it?
If you have the extra money to pay for the subscription, then we think it is totally worth it. It gives that piece of mind, so even if at any point our dog would run away, we can track her down.
We have used Tractive GPS dog tracker since 2021 and we can honestly say, that we will continue using it. So definitely give it a try.
2. How does Tractive GPS pet tracker differ from a microchip?
A regular microchip helps to identify your pet, when the microchip is scanned at the vet’s office or shelter.
But this is not a tracking device and basically is only beneficial, if someone finds your lost pet and takes them to the vet or shelter, where the owner can be identified.
3. What is the size and weight of Tractive pet trackers?
Tractive GPS Dog 6 - size: 71 x 28 x 18 mm; weight: 39 grams
Tractive Cat Mini - size: 55 x 28 x 17 mm; weight: 25 grams
Tractice Dog XL - size: 89 x 51 x 24 mm; weight: 89.9 grams
Tractive Dog XL Adventure - size: 97 x 51 x 24 mm; weight: 115 grams
But if you are still unsure which one to choose, then take a piece of paper, cut out every Tractive tracker size and try it on your dog to get a better understanding of the sizing.
4. Can I use the pet tracker for multiple pets?
Technically you could, BUT if one of your pet wears the tracker and the other one doesn’t, then if the pet without GPS tracker runs away, then there’s no way to track them down.
So for safety, each pet would need their own Tractive GPS tracker. However, you can manage multiple trackers with ease within the Tractive app. Just switch between pets to see their profiles, location etc.
5. Is cellular coverage necessary for the Tractive GPS tracker to work?
Yes, because Tractive uses local cellular networks to send you your pet’s location to your phone, through the Tractive app.
It’s good to keep in mind that pet tracking might be affected slightly, if you are in an area with poor cellular coverage.
6. What is the battery life of Tractive pet tracker?
There are a few factors to keep in mind.
Firstly, depends on which of the Tractive GPS trackers you have, because bigger trackers (Tractive XL, Tractive XL Adventure) have bigger batteries, meaning bigger and longer lasting battery. Smaller devices (Tractive Dog 6, Tractive Cat Mini) are smaller and so are the batteries.
Secondly, it also depends on how you use it. With standard tracking mode battery lasts several days (up to 14 if at home the device is in sleep mode). But if using live tracking frequently, it will drain the battery quite fast.
7. Are Tractive trackers waterproof?
Yes. Their GPS trackers are fully waterproof (up to 1 meter depth, 30 minutes). So they are suitable for every water and swimming loving dog out there!
8. Can I track my pet from multiple devices?
Absolutely! With the same account you can log into your dog’s profile in different devices at the same time.
BUT, keep in mind that you do need a premium subscription if you want to share your pet’s loctaion with family and friends.
9. Is Tractive GPS tracker better than Apple AirTag?
Apple AirTag isn’t meant for pet tracking, but it’s possible to use it in some cases. Apple AirTag is great to find misplaced things or pets who appear within Bluetooth range and near other Apple devices.
Tractive instead uses cellular networks and GPS satellites to give you live tracking basically anywhere, as long as there is coverage. So Tractive will keep tracking if your pet runs into woods, AirTag won’t.
10. How far can Tractive track my pet?
Technically you could say that Tractive has unlimited range, because it works anywhere, where there is GPS and cellular coverage.
Even if your pet is across the country, you can track them through the app.
11. How do I use Tractive GPS tracker?

12. Where to buy Tractive GPS tracker?
There are a several places you can look for. When buying online, then on Tractive’s official website and Amazon. But you might also find some of their trackers from local retailers.
13. What is Tractive basic vs premium plan?
Basic plan gives you access to real time pet tracking, activity monitoring and the ability to set up safe zones for your pet. It is great for everyday tracking need. But you can only have one account for your pet (no sharing) and you’re limited with only one country.
Premium plan includes everything that Basic plan does, plus the worldwide coverage, location sharing with friends and family, multi pet and multi device support, 365 days of location history and also GPS data export.
You can easily get through with the basic plan. So it more depends on what are your needs and if you want or need to use the features offered with the premium plan.
14. What is the difference between Tractive Dog 6 and Tractive Dog 4 tracker?
The Tractive Dog 6 is their latest model with major updates that the previous model, the Dog 4 didn’t have or weren’t good.
Dog 6 has better battery life, faster live tracking, improved design, universal charger (usb-c), updated health and activity monitoring.
And while Tractive Dog 4 is functional and reliable, the Dog 6 does offer better performance. If you want to know more, you can read from our Tractive Dog 6 review.
15. Which Tractive pet GPS tracker to choose?
On Tractive’s website you can find 1 cat GPS tracker and 3 different dog GPS trackers. And which one to choose, basically depends on your dog (big or small), activity and your needs (what functions are important to you).
But after looking at all of the trackers and still being unsure, then go with the latest Tractive GPS Dog 6, since we think it gives currently best overall experience.
