Should you get Tractive Cat Mini…and why are we at Pocket Puppy School reviewing it?

Then why review a cat GPS tracker, you ask? Well, many of our blog readers, app users and followers are proud owners of both dogs and cats. Our families have cats as well.

That is why we asked Tractive if they could send us their Cat Mini GPS device and they kindly said yes! 🙏

And while dogs might wander off at times, cats are in a league of their own - they have a knack for wandering off as they please and keeping their humans on their toes.

How we tested it?

We are proud owners of a almost 7 year old Siberian Husky girl. So you might ask, how did we test the cat GPS tracker?

We have a family cat, called Kiki in our grandparents’ country house. And since parents and grandparents often talk about their worries about Kiki going for a bit too long adventures, then there was no question.

Kiki the family cat was the chosen one.

Once Kiki the cat was actually stuck in one of the neighbours’ shed for quite a few days and nights and her health had significantly gone worse. Luckily she got out from the shed, went home and got all better.

Now that Kiki has been wearing the Cat Mini by Tractive, our parents can always keep an eye on Kiki when she goes outside. And we must say, we can see that this little device has given them a piece of mind.

What is great, what could be improved?

Let’s start with the good things first.

+ Real time updates -> your cat’s location is updated in every few minutes.
+ Activity and health monitoring -> a nice feature to get a better overview of your cat’s overall health.
+ Sound and light features -> when you are looking for your cat, then you can turn these on and they might help you in finding your cat.

+ Tracker comes with a safety collar, charger and a silicon case -> if your cat doesn’t have a collar yet, then you don’t even need to specifically buy one.

+ Virtual fences -> you can set safe zones. So when your cat wanders outside of that area, for example your home garden, you will get notified.
+ Location history -> you can look where your cat has been these last couple of days/nights. Or find the place where your cat spends most of its time, while not at home.

So far we haven’t really had any big problems with the cat GPS itself. But there are a few features that could be improved.
- Battery -> when the device itself is made light and compact to fit cats, the battery does take a hit. So you do need to keep in mind, if your cat comes home from a longer adventure, definitely charge the Cat Mini before your cat’s next outing.

- LED light -> Cat Mini also has a light feature…but it’s a bit too small to notice. But since with the last dog tracker the Dog 6 we saw a great improvement, we’re hoping that in the future releases this will also get an upgrade.

- Some of the app -> since our parents are regularly using this to track Kiki the cat, then it’s important for them to be able to understand the app. But unfortunately you can’t choose the language in the app. It is based on you phone’s closest language. Also, you can’t cancel subscriptions from the app, which is uncomfortable.

- Specific charger -> again we have to mention that the Dog 6, accepts a more universal, USB-C charger, but unfortunately other trackers haven’t caught up with that…yet. It would be awesome to see this upgrade in the future as well.

Should you get the Tractive Cat Mini?

Overall we think that Tractive Cat mini is well designed cat GPS tracker. You can see that they have really kept in mind the cats, who are gonna be daily users of this device.

It is light, small and tracks your cat accurately, where ever their paws take them.

If you keep in mind the battery charging - it’s definitely not a dealbreaker, rather something to plan around.

Are we gonna keep using it on Kiki the cat? Of course! We’re happy to see that our parents don’t feel as worried and uneasy anymore.

So if your cat is a fearless explorer and has a habit to disappear for a few nights straight, then give Tractive Cat Mini a try!
