Home made healthy dog cookie recipe
Let’s bake some yummy home made cookies for dogs. 🍪
Baking home made dog cookies or treats is a great way showing your dog some extra love. Not only do you get to choose the quality of the ingredients, but it can also be a very fun activity. And why not inviting your kids or other family members with you, to enjoy some quality time together while making your dog extra happy with some yummy cookies.
Ingredients and their benefits
For these yummy, soft cookies I used simple, wholesome ingredients, which I also use in my everyday cooking. They’re tasty, but also packed with nutrients.
Regular rolled oats - they are great source of fiber (good for digestion), but also rich in vitamins and minerals.
Sweet potato - as a root vegetable it’s a great source of vitamin A, B6 and C. It helps with good vision, skin healt and digestion.
Egg - we all know that eggs are good source of protein and with that, they support muscle health.
Banana - this fruit is super rich in potassium and fiber. And since bananas are naturally sweet, they naturally sweeten the cookies without needing to use any other sweeteners, which are not good for dogs anyway.
The recipe
You’ll need:
1 cup of regular rolled oats
1 medium sweet potato (cooked and mashed)
1 egg
1 ripe banana (mashed)
Optional: silicone cookie mold
Instructions:
Preheat your oven and set it to 180°C. Then line a baking sheet with parchment paper (if you are not using special cookie molds). If you are using baking molds, then just rub them with a little bit of unsalted butter, so the cookies won’t stick.
Preparing the ingredients is fairly simple. In a mixing bowl, just combine the rolled oats, mashed sweet potato, egg and mashed banana. Mix everything together. The “dough” should be on the thicker side, but also slightly sticky. I the mixture is too wet, just add a bit more oats until you get this thicker consistency.
Now, if you do not have or don’t want to use the molds, then just take a spoonful of cookie dough and shape then into whatever shape you like. I tried to make bone shapes and then circular ones with a paw print. But if you have the molds, just distribute the cookie dough and you’re ready.
Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes (depending on how thick you made the cookies). Depending on the oven and the cookie thickness etc, it might take a bit less, might take a bit more time. To see if the cookies are ready, feel free to use the stick/toothpick method. If the dough does not stick to the toothpick, then then hoorraay - the cookies are ready!.
Let the cookies cool down completely, before you surprise your dog with these yummy cookies. Store the leftover cookies on a plate or airtight container, but cookies that are THIS good won’t last for too long anyways.
I hope you’ll give this super easy dog cookie recipe a try. I can tell you it’s totally forth it, after you see how quickly your dog eats the cookies with gusto. 🥹 Happy baking!
